Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Haunted Mind
AMHERST – The Amherst Town Library welcomes independent literary historian and playwright Rob Velella as he presents, “Nathaniel Hawthorne: The Haunted Mind,” on Tuesday, April 18 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Main Reading Room. Remembered today for his novels like The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables, author Nathaniel Hawthorne focused on tales and short stories for the majority of his career. Due to his reclusive nature, however, Hawthorne never offered a public reading in his lifetime and, in fact, often scorned the fame which he earned. For this presentation, however, the author himself (portrayed by literary historian Rob Velella) will return to read some of his short works that explore the dark side of human nature. A question and answer session will follow the performance.
Rob Velella specializes in American literature of the 19th century. Through public lectures, dramatic readings, scholarly publications, museum exhibitions, and tours, he has attempted to bring the writers of yesterday back to the readers of today. He has dramatically brought to life several literary figures, including Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe. His living history performances have been featured on National Public Radio and the LA Review of Books.
All programs offered at the Amherst Town Library are free and open to the public. However, registration is REQUIRED for each program due to space limitations. Amherst Library April Professional Artist Exhibit — In Vivid Color
AMHERST – The Friends of the Amherst Town Library is delighted to be exhibiting color-pencil artist Tina Gagnon during the month of April. Tina is a color pencil artist whose work captures both the vivid and sometimes subtle colors found in nature. Having spent her professional career in the Graphic Arts industry, ”Fleur de Lys Calla Rouge”, Color Pencil by Tina Gagnon
in 2007 she was given the chance to embark on my Fine Arts career. She set out trying every medium she could get my hands on. While she could accomplish a piece competently, something was missing. “Going through an old closet, I came across my twenty year old set of colored pencils. Why not? I gave them a chance. It was with them that I found what I was missing. I like to call it “The Zone.” That is where the world around you melts away, you are in tune with your art, your reference materials are no longer needed, and the creativity just flows from your brain to your hand to the paper. My love of colored pencils was born right then and there.”

New Hampshire Children’s Author, Rodman Philbrick Visits Us – May 1, 6:30 p.m.
AMHERST – On Monday, May 1, at 6:30pm, Rodman Philbrick will be here to discuss the art of writing in general, and his recent middle-grade novel The Big Dark in particular.
‘The Big Dark’, a thrilling adventure, was published in January of 2016. It asks the question, what would you do if electricity suddenly failed? If every cell phone, computer, and electrical circuit stopped functioning? When residents of a remote New Hampshire village gather to watch a spectacular display of the northern lights, no one expects to witness a cataclysmic solar event that will change their lives forever. With his hometown spiraling into chaos, Charlie Cobb sets off on a perilous journey to save his mother’s life, battling a bitter cold winter, a pack of starving coyotes, and a violent survivalist bent on seizing power.
Many of the middle school students in Amherst have been reading The Big Dark this year, so the Town Library is happy to be able to offer the opportunity to hear this accomplished author talk about the writing process. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Amherst Town Library and other local libraries. Other books for young readers by Mr. Philbrick include Freak the Mighty, The Young Man and the Sea, Zane and the Hurricane, and The Fire Pony.
