Symphony NH Presents Smetana & Dvořák Across the State in April
NASHUA – Whether you woke up in Lebanon or Nashua, audiences across the state can spend an evening in the Eastern European countryside with Symphony NH at Smetana and Dvořák: Friday, April 7th at 8 pm at the Concord City Auditorium; Saturday, April 8th at 8 pm at Keefe Center for the Arts; and Sunday, April 9th at 3 pm at the Lebanon Opera House. Symphony NH, led by Music Director Jonathan McPhee, will perform a program of the Czech masters guaranteed to transport listeners to far away landscapes dotted with distant castles and cut with winding rivers.
The concert begins with Smetana’s The Moldau, a tribute to the Czech Republic’s longest river that carries audience members along the river, flowing through scenes of the Czech countryside, magnificent castles, and historic cities. The Moldau is part of Smetana’s series of six symphonic poems entitled Má vlast, which translates to “My Homeland”, showing the impact of nature on Smetana’s life and experiences.
Symphony NH’s own Principal Oboe, Cheryl Bishkoff, will perform Martinů’s rustic Concerto for Oboe. The Richmond News Leader describes Bishkoff as “…a musician of incredible artistry,” and “…a sensitive player in every respect.” Hear the instrument you might recognize as beginning the orchestra’s tuning at the beginning of each concert front and center stage in a virtuosic performance.
The second half of Smetana and Dvořák features Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, hailed as one of the most important symphonic works in the post-Beethoven era. Hear the symphony that stands alongside those of Brahms and Beethoven with its dark meanderings and complex sounds live this April with Symphony NH.
Join Symphony NH bassist Robert Hoffman for a free pre-concert discussion at the Nashua Public Library Thursday, April 6th at 5:30 pm. This open discussion explores the history, context, and special musical moments of the works in the concert, with musical excerpts to illuminate the discussion.
Symphony NH will perform Smetana and Dvořák April 7th at 8 pm at the Concord City Auditorium, April 8th at 8 pm at Keefe Center for the Arts, and April 9th at 3 pm at the Lebanon Opera House. Listen Hear: The Art of Sound
BOSTON, MA – The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum offers a thought-provoking, sound art exhibition this spring called, Listen Hear: The Art of Sound, featuring 12 artists and architects from around the world who use a broad range of approaches to sound art. Various forms of active listening will be explored in the Museum and in nearby neighborhoods for the exhibition, opened March 8 and runs through Sept. 5.
Listen Hear will feature ten installations of sound art – eight designed to be experienced inside the Museum. The two others will be off-site, public art works: a free app that offers an immersive sound walk of the Back Bay Fens, the urban park system adjacent to the Museum; and a sound environment installed at the Ruggles MBTA transit station. Several works are conceived as site-specific installations for the Museum’s spaces including the Courtyard, the Dutch Room, the Tapestry Room and Hostetter Gallery, among others.
“These works are very diverse and reflect a growing and nuanced field. They are designed to inspire the public to listen and to become more aware of how sound affects us,” said Pieranna Cavalchini, the Museum’s Tom and Lisa Blumenthal Curator of Contemporary Art. “In this exhibition, we are exploring different modes of listening in interior and exterior spaces. Different techniques delve into acoustic mapping and real-time projections of sound across urban spaces. It’s an entirely new way of thinking about sound.”
Cavalchini co-curated the exhibition with Peggy Burchenal, Esther Stiles Eastman Curator of Education, and Charles Waldheim, Ruettgers Curator of Landscape.
Listen Hear will feature works by a dozen emerging and established artists and architects who approach the art of sound from various perspectives: visual arts, architecture, landscape, design, and music. Among them are: Philip Beesley, Toronto; Moritz Fehr, Berlin; David Grubbs, New York City; Elisa Hamilton, Arlington, MA; Ernst Karel, Boston; Lee Mingwei, Paris; Helen Mirra, San Francisco; O & A, (Bruce Odland, Hudson, NY and Sam Auinger, Berlin); Philippe Rahm, Paris; Teri Rueb, Buffalo, NY; Su-Mei Tse, Berlin.
